Thookudurai Movie Review: There are plenty of Ajith references in Thookudurai. Even the title of the film is the same as the actor’s character from the 2019 Siva-directed film, Viswasam. It’s as if the makers thought that if nothing else worked, then at least the reference to a big star would get the audience into theatres.
But sadly, none of that helps this horror comedy that shows promise at the beginning, only to not live up to any of your initial expectations. Of course, certain jokes in the film do work, but that has more to do with the capable actors who delivering them than the material itself.
The tone of the film is intentionally over-the-top, but that isn’t the problem. Thookudurai is not coherent in the way it tells the story. Everything’s all over the place most of the time. The idea in itself is intriguing, but the story hasn’t been translated well to the screen.
When it comes to the actors, Yogi Babu is basically Yogi Babu-ing throughout the film. Whenever he appears on screen, his mere presence is enough to get you interested in what’s happening. And there aren’t many actors who can claim to have that hold over the audience.
